Sabae city of Fukui Prefecture is the most famous
optical manufacturing district in the world.
Though holding 95% of domestic share,
the eyeglass industry in Sabae struggles to survive.

Kaneko Optical greatly admires the outstanding work
of a craftsman and challenged the crisis as a team to face
an industry that was beginning to decline.

As a result, to revitalize the local industry in Fukui,
we took action by establishing our own factory “BACKSTAGE” in 2006.

Thereafter, in 2008 “THE STAGE” was opened inside the historic
and legendary Shibakawa Building located in the city of Osaka.
It was our hope to create a deeper awareness
of craftsmanship to more people.

“THE STAGE” is a place where people can connect
to the craftsmanship culture in Sabae,
Fukui- the historic glasses-producing center in Japan.
We hope the STAGE will act as a multi-purpose place
that will teach about handcrafting in variety of ways.

The “STAGE” functions as a museum to learn
the history of glasses through our displaying
of antique glasses and historic eyeglass equipment.
Here, you can experience the progression
of eyewear from generation after generation
as you see the changing functions and evolution in design.
“The stage” is also a store that displays
the hand-made eyewear made by the craftsmen.
We wish you can feel the high quality
craftsmanship from these glasses.
